What Is Constitutional Hydrotherapy?
Constitutional hydrotherapy uses a sequence of warm and cool towels applied to the abdomen and back while you rest on a treatment table. Low-level electrical stimulation is applied through pads placed on the back and abdomen during part of the session.
You remain covered with sheets and blankets between applications. There is no pool, bath, or internal cleansing involved.
At OCH, we offer this treatment as a complementary part of an individualized care plan. It does not replace evaluation or treatment for an underlying health condition.
Who Might Consider This Treatment?
You may be curious about constitutional hydrotherapy if you are looking for a quiet, hands-on appointment focused on rest and comfort alongside your ongoing care.
Patients sometimes ask about this treatment while navigating:
Stress and body tension
Fatigue or feeling run down
Muscle tension and generalized discomfort
Ongoing digestive symptoms
Recovery after a period of illness or physical stress
These concerns can have many causes. Their presence does not necessarily mean hydrotherapy is the right treatment, and we’ll discuss your health history before recommending it.
Our constitutional hydrotherapy appointments are primarily intended for adults. Older teens may be considered after an individual assessment.
Our Approach to Constitutional Hydrotherapy
We take time to explain the treatment, answer questions, and discuss what feels comfortable for you. Your experience of receiving care matters as much as understanding the steps involved.
Hands-on care can bring up physical sensations or emotions. There is room to talk about your experience, ask for a pause, or let your provider know that something doesn’t feel right.
Our providers offering constitutional hydrotherapy received training in this treatment during their naturopathic medical education. They consider your medical history, treatment goals, and any reasons the towel applications or electrical stimulation may not be appropriate.
Depending on your needs, care may include:
Detailed pelvic health assessment
Breath and pressure management
Gentle pelvic floor muscle retraining
Core and hip stabilization work
Posture and movement education
Nervous system regulation strategies
Manual therapy techniques, when appropriate
Home exercises and self-care guidance
Lifestyle and habit support
What Happens During an Appointment?
-
01. Checking In & Getting Comfortable
Your provider reviews whether treatment is appropriate and explains what to expect. You’ll have privacy to undress as needed and settle face up on the table, with sheets and blankets provided for coverage.
-
02. Warm & Cool Towel Applications
Your provider applies warm towels to your abdomen, followed by cool towels that gradually warm against your body. Tell your provider if the temperature feels uncomfortable at any point.
-
03. Gentle Electrical Stimulation
During part of the treatment, your provider uses low-level electrical stimulation through pads positioned on your back and abdomen. They’ll explain this portion of the treatment and check your comfort.
-
04. Treatment on Your Back & Final Check-In
You’ll turn onto your stomach for a sequence of warm and cool towels on your back. Your provider may finish with a gentle towel rub. Before you leave, your provider checks how you’re feeling and takes your blood pressure. You’ll have time to discuss any symptoms or questions and whether another appointment makes sense.
Before Your Visit
-
Your experience may vary. You may find the quiet setting and towel applications relaxing, or you may not notice a change in your symptoms.
Let your provider know how you feel during and after treatment, including any fatigue, chills, dizziness, skin irritation, or discomfort. Together, you can decide whether to continue, adjust, or stop treatment.
Specific improvements in digestion, immunity, circulation, or chronic illness symptoms cannot be promised.
-
Before scheduling, let us know if you:
Are pregnant or may be pregnant
Have a pacemaker, insulin pump, or another implanted or wearable medical device
Have a copper IUD
Use a medication patch, especially near the treatment area
Have a heart or circulatory condition, blood pressure concerns, or a history of fainting
Have reduced temperature sensation or a neurological condition that affects sensation
These details may affect whether treatment is appropriate. Some circumstances require avoiding the electrical-stimulation component or the treatment altogether. Your provider will review this with you before proceeding.
Possible risks include temporary chills, fatigue, dizziness, changes in blood pressure or heart rate, and skin irritation. Hot or cold applications can also cause tissue injury if temperatures are unsuitable.
You can ask to pause or stop treatment at any time.
