What is an Ear Lavage?

Ear lavage is a safe, gentle procedure used to remove excess earwax (cerumen) that may be be causing hearing changes, ear fullness, discomfort, ringing in the ears, or dizziness.

Using warm water and specialized equipment, our providers carefully flush the ear canal to remove impacted wax while protecting the ear canal and eardrum. Before beginning, we'll examine your ears to make sure ear lavage is the right treatment for you.

The procedure is quick, requires no downtime, and many patients notice immediate improvement in comfort and hearing.

What to Expect During Your Ear Lavage

  • 01. Before Your Visit

Your provider will examine your ears to make sure your eardrum is intact and confirm that earwax buildup is the cause of your symptoms. This helps ensure ear lavage is the safest and most appropriate treatment.

  • 02. During Your Ear Lavage

You'll remain comfortably seated while warm water is gently flushed into the ear using the Elephant® Ear Wash System. You may notice warmth, a swooshing sound, or the sensation that your ear is underwater. The procedure should not be painful, though mild pressure is normal.

  • 03. After Your Appointment

After the earwax has been removed, we'll examine your ear again to confirm the canal is clear. If any wax remains or the ear canal is irritated, your provider may recommend ear drops or additional care instructions before you leave.
