WEIGHT-INCLUSIVE PRIMARY CARE & EATING DISORDER SUPPORT IN BALLARD

Dr. Claire Hannes provides trauma-informed, weight-inclusive primary care and eating disorder medical support at One Connection Healthcare in Ballard, Seattle.

Meet Dr. Claire Hannes

I grew up in Seattle, a hub for naturopathic medicine, and from an early age I was drawn toward a whole-person approach to physical and mental health. After graduating from Gonzaga University in 2010 with a BA in English and Creative Writing and a minor in Italian Studies, I spent two and a half years teaching English in Japan before returning to Seattle to complete my premedical coursework and pursue naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University.

I joined the One Connection Healthcare team in 2020 after completing my Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree and later went on to complete a two-year naturopathic residency under the mentorship of Dr. Lily Stokely, founder of One Connection Healthcare. My clinical training focused extensively on outpatient eating disorder medical management alongside comprehensive primary care in a busy integrative practice.

Today, I work with individuals seeking a more connected, collaborative, and compassionate healthcare experience — one that values both evidence-based medicine and the realities of being human.

A Weight-Inclusive & Trauma-Informed Approach to Primary Care

While shadowing Dr. Lily Stokely during my medical training, I was immediately inspired by the Health at Every Size® philosophy and incorporated it into my framework for patient care. I believe that health, value, and wellbeing are not determined by weight, acts of self-control, or punishment. Instead, I believe true health is rooted in self-respect, care, and sustainable support.

I strive to create a medical experience that feels collaborative rather than prescriptive. Many patients come to One Connection Healthcare after difficult or even harmful experiences within the medical system, and I hold deep awareness of the ways healthcare environments can impact nervous system regulation, trust, and emotional safety.

My goal is to create space where patients feel heard, respected, and actively involved in decision-making. I want to understand your priorities, values, concerns, and goals so we can build an approach to care that feels realistic and supportive of your actual life.

As a naturopathic physician, I draw from both conventional and natural medicine and enjoy having a broad treatment toolkit that allows flexibility and truly integrative care. When appropriate, I tend to prioritize lower-force interventions first while remaining grounded in evidence-informed medicine and individualized care.

Areas of Clinical Focus

  • I work with patients experiencing gastrointestinal concerns including IBS, SIBO, GERD, dysbiosis, and provide adjunctive support for IBD. My goal is to help patients better understand patterns within their health while creating sustainable and individualized treatment plans.

  • Mental and emotional health are deeply interconnected with physical wellbeing. I incorporate trauma-informed care, mind-body approaches, pharmacological management when appropriate, nutraceutical support, and nervous system awareness into treatment planning.

  • Before becoming a physician, I practiced as a massage therapist, which strengthened both my manual therapy skills and appreciation for mind-body medicine and somatic approaches to care. I now incorporate multiple physical medicine modalities into my work, including manual therapy, osseous manipulation, trigger point injections, and musculoskeletal support for pain and injury.

Background, Credentials, and Ethics

I obtained my Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine after graduating from Bastyr University in 2020 and went on to complete a two-year naturopathic residency with Dr. Lily Stokely, the founder of One Connection Healthcare. This experience provided extensive training in the outpatient medical management of eating disorders and day-to-day primary care in a busy practice.  I worked as a massage therapist during my medical training, which strengthened my manual therapy skills and deepened my appreciation for mind–body medicine and somatic approaches.

“First, Do No Harm” is a core principle of the Hippocratic Oath that I hold closely, especially knowing how many patients have been previously traumatized by the medical establishment. I strive to create a medical experience that allows for nervous system regulation and collaboration. I aim to meet people where they are and implement harm-reduction approaches when appropriate and ethical. I value the essential role of therapists and dieticians in a well-rounded eating disorder care team as well as coordination with other providers to ensure well-connected care. Additionally, I hold the awareness that people have unequal access to resources that influence their physical and emotional health and aim to tailor treatment to mitigate barriers as much as possible.

What Keeps Me Joyful

Outside of practicing medicine, I love exploring and adventuring. I’m often out meeting neighborhood cats and photographing different areas of Seattle with my husband as we have a long-standing photo contest. I adore writing, Florence and the Machine, and reading about Jungian psychology. I have a zest for life that I hope translates into some lightness and humor.
